I Ran (So Far Away)

It's frigid here in the K-Ville. K-Town. K-Mart... Call it what you will. Regardless, it's really quite chilly.

My sad news is that I'm work-sick. I've been doing a really good job of budgeting my time, and getting everything done, but its been too draining to the point that now I'm fatigued.

Every day I wake up really tired. I lie to myself and tell myself that I'm going to nap later in the day. It is a lie my one self tells every morning to the other self; it's a lie the other self believes every morning as well...

I then go to classes, and when I'm not in class I'm doing homework. Then comes meals, when I go and eat, and then come back and do more work. BLAH. I've ended up delegating 'fun-time' to the hour block between when I get out of the shower and when I go to bed. [I must have watched The Office DVD like... 3 times through now. It's sad.] As a result, I don't go to bed until around 1-1:30, which in turn means I have to wake up and lie to myself about the nap thing.

Suffice to say that I'm sick of the cycle, and am greatly looking forward to this weekend! This Friday Jim Gaffigan is coming to Truman, and we're going to see him. Following this, Ian and Lizz and I will hop into a car and drive back to Kansas City. There I'll be attending the Sadie Hawkins dance with Kathryn Murphy!

Ian will be in attendance with my sister, of all people;
and Joanne will be joining us with whatever action she scored at the club the night before.

Erin and Murphy asked Ian and myself in a very clever, long distance sort of way. They made each of us a deck of apples-to-apples cards! I picked out my favorites and listed them here:

Uniforms -
The plaid isn't bad, (but that rhyme sure is)

Juggernaut -
Have you ever seen a costume like mine?

Bullet Holes -
Why would someone putty up historical bullet holes?
That's just tacky.

House -
Don't mess with his pimp cane.

SudexHo -
You think you won't miss it, but you will.

Sean Connery -
The card that trumps all others.

Those totally made today. Which is good, because my yesterday got made as well.
If I may quote directly, Joanne sent me the following message, in Visiolibri [from the Latin, on Facebook]:

now it's my turn to tell you that i have to go work on some awesome calc for hurst. ohh yes!!! I FORGOT TO TELL YOU!! alex morris has your book from last year (i tried to get him to trade, but he won't, it's kinda strange actually...) and the other day we were flipping to a page and tom's handwriting was inside. what did it say??

"...And i ran, i ran so far away. i just raaaaaan, i ran all night and daaaaay." pg. 279. -i should have taken it as a sign to drop. but i didn't!

"Sometimes, I even amaze myself." - Han Solo

I wrote things in my math book because I hate math, and would rather deface school property than actually work. Those books were brand new, which means that they'll be with the course for a few years... which means that kids will see my defacement-musings for years to come.

I just never figured someone would read them and appreciate them.

How utterly delightful, in spite of everything else.

Have You Ever Seen the Rain?

Here I am in the lobby of Centennial, tip-typing away on the ol' MacTopPro.

Today its little raincoat came in the mail, and I'm trying to get used to it.
When I say 'raincoat', I mean [this].

It's pretty cool. I like the idea that my keyboard is now impervious to liquid spills, not to mention small dust particles and other sticky or invasive substances.

Plus it's black:

Which gives me a sort of sense of individuality, making this not just 'another MacBook'.
Now, it has truly become, the
MAC
TOP
PRO

An additional fun fact: An emergency meeting of student senate is scheduled for 9:30 PM tomorrow. How exciting!

100°

This morning I had Mathematica Lab for my Calc III course. We basically draw fancy graphs on the computer using math. It's not half bad.

Today's exercise was creating tangent planes. It basically means that if you've got some round thing, the tangent plane is the plane that extends from a single touching point outwards. Basically, it supposed to sit right on top of whatever round curvy shape you've created.

The operative word being supposed. Mine sliced straight through my round thing, like a knife dicing some type of vegetable I would most likely not eat. It was amusing... in a depressing sort of way.

In the depressing vein, how about that weather. "Bleak" doesn't even to describe. Carol informs me that Springfield, MO. is a very cold, very icy, wasteland/warzone. Which sounds pretty cool. They got of school, so it could be a cold icy nuclear holocaust for all I'm concerned; they get to sleep in.

Last night they shut off the heat in Centennial Hall because it was broken and needed fixing. Earlier in the evening, Lizz had said how awful it would be without hot water. Ian and I preceded to inform her that the central heating radiators and water heater were set up on separate systems, so that wouldn't be a problem.

As I would soon find out, Ian and I are occasionally quite mistaken. It was 12:15 AM, and the room was getting so cold I couldn't use my hands to type anymore. So I started up my electric blanket to preheat my bed, and went to go take a quick shower. I jumped in, unsuspecting, and it was frigid. Thank god the blood in my veins was freezing; had that not distracted me, I may have died from the pure poetic justice I'd just been served, straight from the shower head.

[In hindsight, the school is heated by radiators, which have hot water run through them and dissipate the heat run from the water; if that wouldn't work, I've no clue why we assumed the regular water would be OK...]

Fastest shower I've ever taken. I couldn't have been in there for more than 2 minutes.
Which then begs the question of how much good it actually did me.

In any case, the bed was warm, which made me happy.
Then followed the Mathematica Lab the next morning, so now you're up to speed.

Why Do I Keep Counting?

Man. Taking down a Christmas tree is about the most upsetting thing in the world. Everything that was getting you all pumped up for the holidays... backwards. Anti-pump-up. Yuck... Packing up the ornaments made me stop and think a bit. So many of them say "1994" or "1996" and it really freaks me out to think that that was ten years ago. A whole decade! Makes me feel old.

In any case, I hope everyone had a safe new years. 2007 is going to rock hard. I've just got a feeling.
(For the record: '08, '09 will rock progressively harder. 2010-2012 will be lame).

Also, the Chiefs made it to the playoffs. Not that they really deserve it, but it's still kinda neat.

[I'm also tinkering with Pandora, a streaming music service. It's creepy how dead-on it can be; it's obnoxious how often it can be completely wrong though...]

Sad Fact: I just now finished my Christmas shopping.
Tom Hogan: worst friend ever.
I said it... so you don't have to!
